Magic Hours: Engineering Lighting for Cinema

Explore one of the world’s most important inventions through the lens of cinema. Cinematographer Mia Cioffi Henry and other special guests joins us for conversations about the art and science of cinematography and film lighting, with a focus on the impact of Black innovations in the field.

Lighting and cinematography convey emotion and story, just like other elements of filmmaking. Cinematographer Mia Cioffi Henry (Sorry, Baby screens Aug. 2, 5:00 p.m.) talks with film programmer Shayana Filmore about the craft, with a focus on the impact of Black innovations in the field.

The afternoon also features a screening of Let There Be Light (see below); a family-friendly LED-circuit building workshop; a cinema-inspired light installation by designer Quincy Drane; and a new lighting-focused Museum tour! Free admission.
