About the event

Saturday Field Day - Volcanism in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument
Learn about volcanism in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, specifically in the Western & High Cascades, with geologist, Jad D'Allura!

About this Event

We will meet at 9:00 AM at the Rite Aid in Ashland and make our way into the Monument from there, carpooling optional.

This Eventbrite is for the Saturday Hike ONLY, register for the Friday Night Talk HERE .

The Saturday field trip will include stops that characterize the important and varied volcanic episodes of the older Western Cascades Volcanic Series, where we will see different volcanic eruptive events and exposed deposits of violently erupted ash flows including locations at Howard Prairie Reservoir. We will also investigate sites that exemplify volcanism in the younger High Cascades Volcanic Series such as a rift eruption, vertical dike conduits and lava ramparts. Finally, we will explore the impressive Surveyor Mountain Fault Zone and observe a “beheaded” lava flow.

The Hike & Learn will be led by the dynamic geologist, Jad D’Allura. Jad received his Ph.D. in geology from UC Davis. He worked for Texaco as an exploration geologist for two years then taught geology at SOU for 33 years prior to retirement. He continues to do basic geologic research with University of Oregon undergraduate seniors in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument.

The Saturday Hike will be a long day and require quite a bit of driving. There will the option of carpooling and we will make our way in a caravan. In addition to bringing a packed lunch and plenty of water, please bring stout shoes for hiking and a snack.

The Friends of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument is a nonprofit organization and our mission is to support the protection, restoration and conservation of the monument through service, advocacy and education. Our Hike and Learn program is designed to introduce the public to different topics and locations within the Monument. Hike and Learns are co-created with local scientists, historians, artists, students, and more.
