Hortophila is the desire to interact with, manage, and tend nature. For the past 15 years or so Artist Bob Chaplin has moved from predominantly making studio art, to creating site specific landscape installations.
These are inspired by medieval monastic gardens and classic European formal parterre gardens, but with a twist. As an antithesis of the classic formal garden where exotic plants or herbs are normally planted, he is allowing naturally occurring grasses, shrubs and trees to grow, with no intervention.
His work uses the garden as a symbol and a device to control nature. He explores the tension between natural and man-made intervention using the framework and history of gardening.
inviting questions about what determines ‘natural’ and ‘contrived’ and how this dictates our perception of landscape. Documentation of this process is an integral part of his art, encouraging dialogue and feedback. Learn more about Chaplin's work at www.bobchaplin.com
