Taste of Arthurdale: Appalachian Great Depression Foodways Lecture and Tasting

In a time of economic strife, Americans had to be resourceful and creative when it came to feeding themselves and their families. Come learn about the history of food during the Great Depression in Appalachia, be inspired by stories of our ancestor’s creativity, and even taste some recipes that would have been eaten by them. Lecture and food prepared by historian Katharine Donnelly.

Katie Donnelly is a West Virginia native who holds a BA in History from Fairmont State University and two MAs in History and Museum Administration from Norwich University. She has worked in the museum and history field for over 16 years and has experience teaching at the university level. While fashion history is her main passion, she also enjoys cooking which led her to research historic foodways (the way that we have cooked and consumed food throughout the past). Food and cooking, especially Appalachian traditions that have been passed down through her family, played a huge role in her upbringing and she credits her deep Appalachian roots for who she is today.
