MTCC’s tenth annual driving derby! A Driving Derby is a carriage-driving competition of speed and accuracy, where drivers compete over an arena course that is a combination of marathon and cone obstacles. Each driver will be timed through a numbered course of obstacles/gates in the proper direction and in numerical order to the finish line. Drivers may enter equids of any type and size, from donkeys, to minis, to horses. Training and Preliminary+ division of each of the following groups:
• VSE (Very Small Equid)/Small Pony (less than 12.2 hands)
• Pony (12.2 to 14.2 hands)
• Horse (over 14.2 hands)
• Ridden
The course consists of:
o Common Start/Finish markers
o Two marathon-type obstacles with four compulsory gates each (A, B, C, D for all divisions)
o 10-12 cones-type compulsory gates.
o 1 12’ long bridge, max height 8”
o There will be a minimum of two cones-type compulsory gates between each marathon obstacle and between the start/finish gates and a marathon obstacle.
o Each obstacle is numbered numerically, with gates in marathon obstacles noted by a letter (e.g., 3A, B, C).
o The number of knockdowns on marathon-type obstacles is unlimited and at the discretion of an official.
o The course will be open for inspection prior to competition.
o When the course is ready, the official will signal the Athlete with bell or whistle. Starting before the signal will result in a ten-second penalty and restart.
o Timing will start as the nose of the horse crosses the start gate and stop when the nose crosses the finish gate.
First - sixth ribbons will be awarded in each division/size to the lowest time+penalty scores. Ties will be broken by lowest penalties.
NOTES:
• Training level may only walk and trot, Preliminary+ may use any pace.
• You may drive a 2-or 4-wheel vehicle of any variety.
• Navigators or grooms are required, except for VSE and Small Ponies.
• The ring course may be walked first (and it’s recommended).
• Removing the bridle from an animal harnessed to a vehicle or leaving an animal unattended while hitched anywhere on the grounds will result in ELIMINATION.
• Proof of Negative Coggins within past 12 months must be on hand.
• No need for clean harness, aprons, etc.
• HARD HATS REQUIRED for anyone on the carriage!
