Summary:

The US steel industry is undergoing a significant transformation. New domestic capacity is coming online, new tariffs are sharply reducing imports, and interest rates remain near highs not seen in over 15 years. At the same time, the industry is navigating an ambitious transition toward decarbonization.

Each of these shifts brings its own challenges. The US has been a net importer of steel. Current tariff levels — now at 50% — have effectively halted most steel imports. While there is optimism that new capacity and potential new investment will offset lost trade volumes, high interest rates and uncertainty have dampened demand. Meanwhile, global steel overcapacity — especially in China — is exerting downward pressure on international steel prices.

What are the implications for US steel prices? This presentation will explore these dynamics and their combined effect on the US market and prices. We will present the latest near-term price outlook, highlight key risks to this forecast, and identify signposts that could signal changes ahead.
