RESTRAINTS:
Created through improvisations spanning six years and three countries, RESTRAINTS is a bold, imagistic solo performance that achieves meaning through extreme juxtapositions and startling imagery. Shaker hymns, recollected dreams, the ecstatic poems of Rumi, eerie gypsy fairytales, and the struggle for dominance between darkness and light weave throughout the piece as the main character searches to find within the conflict and confusion some semblance of inner freedom. Using only four evocative props, full physical commitment, and a bare stage, this archetypal figure in black struggles to escape “the witches garden,” responding to each transformation of the silvery white cloth, suspended by it at last above the narrow razor’s edge that separates ecstatic madness from divine spiritual transcendence. Etched through with moments of irony, pathos and dark humor this heroic quest to open the right “doors of perception” raises powerful existential questions about the dark night of the soul and the irrepressible search for truth and light that is at humanity’s core.

“Restraints swings soundly into the next world. Edgecomb expertly captures the terrifying fluidity of psychosis… her juxtapositions prove inspired; she’s aware that fairy tales, the gospels and all great drama come from the same tormented place.” Boston Globe

“… a compelling and well-crafted piece of theatre…[that] jettisons traditional theatrical assumptions.” Retro-Rocket.com (online review)

“The Grotowski-influenced Edgecomb conveyed the precariousness of an unstable human balancing on sanity’s tightrope.” Boston Phoenix

“Actress and award-winning storyteller Diane Edgecomb isn’t afraid of being provocative…those expecting a conventional theatre experience should look elsewhere.” Boston Herald

“The physicality of her acting style lends a visceral edge to her work.” Boston’s Weekly Dig
