Celebrate Pride Month with some sapphic sleuths! We'll be joined by four incredible local authors to discuss their mystery novels featuring queer characters who face murderers, misogynoir, the rise of McCarthyism, and more. With settings ranging from Jazz-Age speakeasies to the halls of a private high school, these gay stories are sure to keep you guessing!
About the authors:
Cheryl A. Head (she/her) is originally from Detroit, and now lives on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC where she has navigated a successful career as a writer, television producer, and broadcast executive. When not writing fiction, Head consults on a wide range of diversity/inclusion issues. Cheryl is the author of the Charlie Mack Motown Mystery series: Anthony Award Nominee; Lambda Literary Award Finalist; IPPY Silver Medal; Goldie Award; Next Generation Indie Award Finalist. She is also the author of Time's Undoing.
Katharine Schellman (she/her) is an award-winning author of historical crime fiction, including the Nightingale Mysteries and the Lily Adler Mysteries. Her novels, which reviewers have called “worthy of Rex Stout or Agatha Christie,” have been named one of Suspense Magazine’s Best Books of the Year, a Library Journal Best Crime Fiction of the Year, and a New York Times editor’s pick. Her work has been nominated for the Silver Falchion award and won the Zibby Media National Book Award for "Best Book for the History Lover." A former actor, onetime political consultant, and graduate of William & Mary, Katharine lives and writes in the mountains of Virginia with her family, an ever-growing TBR pile, and the many houseplants she keeps accidentally murdering.
Stephen Spotswood (he/him) is an award-winning playwright, journalist, and educator. As a journalist, he has spent much of the last two decades writing about the aftermath of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the struggles of wounded veterans. His dramatic work has been widely produced across the United States. He makes his home in Washington, D.C. with his wife, Young Adult author Jessica Spotswood. Dead in the Frame is the fifth book in the Pentecost and Parker Mystery series.
Alex Travis (she/her) worked in autism research for three years and has a Ph.D. in School Psychology at the University of Maryland. As a Black woman, she hopes to add to the growing canon of great YA work about Black teenagers. She lives in Virginia and works as a school psychologist. Alex is also the author of The Only Black Girl in the Room. The Payback Girls is her Young Adult debut.
