Scottish Swifts Conference 2025

Swifts are in urgent need of conservation action!

With a continued and concerning downward trend in swift populations, there has never been a more important time to act to safeguard our Scottish Swifts.

The Common Swift (apus apus) is with us for a few joyful months during the summer when they return from from central and southern Africa to their Scottish breeding grounds to nest.

Swifts mate for life and are faithful to one nest site, returning there year after year. They are associated with older buildings where they use gaps under eaves and cracks in stonework to nest. They bring spectacular aerial displays to our urban settings and carry the sound of summer with their screaming parties.

Swift numbers are in severe decline, with 62% decrease in population, and one of the driving factors for this is thought to be loss of nest sites.

But the good news is: our intervention can have a meaningful positive impact!
