Oboist Carrie Vecchione and her bassist husband Rolf Erdahl will host The Twin Cities Reed Quintet in their backyard summer concert series Wednesday evening, Aug. 20 at 7:00 pm in their Apple Valley backyard. It's a series that was hatched between OboeBass! and their clarinetist friend Jake Meyer who lives in St. Paul, and several of the concerts will also take place in Jake's Summit Avenue backyard.
The Twin Cities Reed Quintet presents music from the new and growing repertoire for the exciting and dynamic Reed Quintet genre. Oboe, Sax, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon. You'll discover music with dark, rich, vibrant sonorities & engaging, rollicking, and even rocking repertoire. Carrie Vecchione, oboe, Joan Hutton, saxophone, Jennifer Gerth, clarinet, Pat O'Keefe, bass clarinet, & Nick Ober, bassoon.
All the artists wanted to bring music to their communities to enjoy on a summer evening. OboeBass! picked a program showcasing the fun variety of music that's been written for their oboe/bass duo, and invited musician friends to join the fun!
The Apple Valley concerts will be at the Vecchione/Erdahl home, 6857 133rd St. W., Apple Valley. It's the house with the solar panels and the oboe/bass tree statue out in front! The OboeBass! concert (performance TBA - original June 25-26 launch concerts scuttled by rain!) will feature music written by Tim Goplerud, Julie Johnson, selections from their recent World Premiere of Alyssa Morris's Common Ground, and OboeBass! arrangements of works of Edvard Grieg and other composers/traditions.
"We're excited by the performers who have signed on to do this! Beside our OboeBass! duo , we're hosting clarinetist Pat O'Keefe's Choro Borealis playing Brazilian dance music, Jake Meyer accompanied by pianist Erin Roe in a clarinet recital, and finishing up with the Twin Cities Reed Quintet for which Carrie is also a founding member. If you haven't heard a reed quintet, you're in for a treat! It's a fun, low, resonant combo of oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bass clarinet, and bassoon — one of the coolest instrumental combos out there, with some really fun repertoire."
Most of the concerts will also be performed the next day in Jake's 1106 Summit Ave. backyard in St. Paul.
There's no charge for the concerts, though tips for the performers will be accepted. Light snacks and beverages will be provided. Weather and performance updates will be posted here at Facebook.com/oboebass.
