(NL)De Oostenrijkse Florentina Holzinger is één van de meest spraakmakende choreografen van het moment. Haar werk balanceert op het scherpst van de snee: prijzen én controverse volgen haar overal. In haar vijfde passage in DE SINGEL duwt ze opnieuw tegen grenzen - die van ballet, popcultuur en hoge kunst, die van het lichaam en het publiek. Haar transgressieve stijl moet een beetje pijn doen, zegt ze zelf. En daar mogen bloed, naakt en lichamelijke uitputting niet bij ontbreken.
A Year Without Summer speelt zich af in 1816, de koudste zomer in de Europese geschiedenis. Mount Tambora barst uit in Indonesië, as vult de hemel, de zon verdwijnt, oogsten mislukken en de wereld verhongert. In datzelfde jaar verblijft de 18-jarige Mary Shelley met andere dichters aan het Meer van Genève, waar storm en duisternis hen inspireren tot het vertellen van spookverhalen. Mary stelt zich Frankenstein voor, een genie van de wetenschap, die de natuur dwingt zich naar zijn hand te zetten en eindigt in de vernietiging met zijn monster dat is samengesteld uit lichaamsdelen.
Florentina Holzinger en de cast onderzoeken de verhalen die we vertellen over onze omgeving, lichamen, gezondheid, verval en identiteiten: het 21e-eeuwse streven naar een lang leven, medische beloften en de gevaren van ongecontroleerde technologische groei in een wereld die wordt gevormd door AI, robotica en bio-engineering. A Year without Summer eigent zich deze poging om de natuur te verbeteren toe tot het punt van perversie en speelt de belofte van eeuwig leven uit tegen de zekerheid van de dood. Maar wat gebeurt er als de schepping het monster wordt? Wanneer de schepping (zoals) ons wordt?

(ENG)The Austrian Florentina Holzinger is one of today’s most talked-about choreographers. Her work teeters on a knife edge: prizes and controversy follow her wherever she goes. In her fifth visit to DE SINGEL, she once again pushes the boundaries - of ballet, pop culture and high art, those of the body and the audience. Her transgressive style must hurt a little, she asserts. And blood, nudity and physical exhaustion are a core part of that.
In 1816, the original "year without summer“, Mount Tambora erupts in Indonesia, ashes fill the sky, the sun disappears, crops fail, and the world hungers. That same year, 18-year-old Mary stays by Lake Geneva with other poets, where storm and darkness inspire them to tell ghost stories. Mary imagines Frankenstein, a genius of science, who forces nature to bend to his will and ends up in destruction with his monster assembled from corpses‘ parts.
Florentina Holzinger and cast explore the stories we tell about our environment, bodies, health, decay and identities: The 21st century pursuit of longevity, medical promises to the perils of unchecked technological growth in a world shaped by AI, robotics, and bioengineering. A Year without Summer appropriates this attempt to improve nature to the point of perversion and plays off the promise of eternal life against the certainty of death. But what happens when the creation becomes the monster? When creation becomes (like) us?
