(NL)Charles Lloyd vierde op 15 maart 2024 zijn 86ste verjaardag met de release van één van de belangrijkste albums uit zijn zeven decennia lange carrière, The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow. Datzelfde jaar nog werd het bekroond met de prestigieuze Edison Prize en tal van andere awards. Lloyd is voor het eerst in DE SINGEL te zien samen met Jason Moran, Larry Grenadier en Eric Harland in het onvolprezen Sky Quartet. Wanneer Lloyd de samenwerking beschrijft, zegt hij: ‘Heel mijn leven lang heb ik het ongelooflijke geluk gehad om samen te werken met muzikanten die op mijn golflengte zitten en samen met mij kunnen dromen. De taal die Jason Moran en ik spreken, staat niet in het Webster-woordenboek of de King James-bijbel. Ze is afkomstig uit een diepgewortelde liefde voor klank en het mysterie dat besloten ligt in de zoektocht naar die klank. Larry Grenadier, met wie ik al optreed en opnames maak sinds The Water Is Wide (1999), koppelt heel die traditie aan een meer dansbare, moderne benadering. Zijn noten verankeren ons en bieden ons tegelijk de mogelijkheid om boven onszelf uit te stijgen. Eric Harland ken ik al sinds 2002, en de vreugde en uitbundigheid die hij toevoegt, doen me denken aan Master Higgins (Lloyds koosnaam voor de in 2001 overleden drummer Billy Higgins). Hij zet zich onbaatzuchtig in voor het grotere geheel.’

(ENG) Charles Lloyd celebrated his 86th birthday on 15 March 2024 with the release of one of the most significant albums of his seven-decade-long career, The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow. That same year, it won the prestigious Edison Prize and numerous other awards. Lloyd will be appearing at DE SINGEL for the first time, alongside Jason Moran, Larry Grenadier, and Eric Harland in the highly acclaimed Sky Quartet. In describing this collaboration, Lloyd says: ‘All my life, I have had the incredibly good fortune to work with musicians who are on the same wavelength and can dream alongside me. The language that Jason Moran and I speak is not found in the Webster dictionary or the King James Bible. It springs from a deep-rooted love of sound and the mystery inherent in the quest for that sound. Larry Grenadier, with whom I have been performing and recording since The Water Is Wide (1999), connects that entire tradition to a more danceable, modern approach. His notes anchor us, while simultaneously offering us the opportunity to transcend ourselves. I have known Eric Harland since 2002, and the joy and exuberance he brings to the ensemble remind me of Master Higgins (Lloyd's affectionate nickname for the drummer Billy Higgins, who died in 2001). He selflessly dedicates himself to the bigger picture.’
