Gulay Pa More - Sagada is a celebration of Filipino heritage, biodiversity, and community spirit. By immersing participants in nature and indigenous traditions of the Cordillera People, this initiative seeks to inspire meaningful action towards a better future—one that honors our past while securing a sustainable food system for all.
Building on the success of previous Gulay Pa More! (GPM) events at Quezon City and Laguna with a total of 4,000 and 1,500 participants, respectively, GPM Sagada seeks to connect participants from outside of the Cordillera to the lives of Indigenous Peoples and farmers of Mountain Province and their practices on agroecology and sustainable food production-consumption.
Objectives:
1. Promote Food Heritage: Highlight indigenous knowledge on agroecology specifically on organic farming of vegetables, mushroom foraging, and coffee production in Mt. Province and its culinary applications;
2. Solidarity with Communities: Learn ways on how to honor and support the crucial contribution of IPS, farmers and small producers in food security and preservation of biodiversity;
3. Raise Awareness: Advocate for plant-based diets and food biodiversity as solutions to food insecurity and environmental challenges.
Activities:
1. Camping and Learning Sessions: Gain insights into local practices and wisdom on topics such as organic farming, food security, agroecology, and biodiversity preservation through interactive knowledge-sharing sessions in a camp-setting.
2. Community Cooking: Celebrate local produce, flavors, and culinary traditions by participating in collective meal preparations of plant-based dishes that will sustain the entire camp and sharing it to the wider Sagada community. This practice is a cherished tradition in Mt. Province during special occasions.
3. Guided Foraging of Edible Plants and Mushrooms: Explore the forests of Sagada with experienced local guides who will teach you to identify wild edible plants and mushrooms while highlighting their ecological significance.
4. Farm Produce Display and Local Market Tour: Engage with smallholder farmers to learn more about their organic farming practices through displays of their produce and products. Immerse in Sagada’s vibrant Market Day for a deeper understanding of the local agricultural landscape.
5. Coffee Trail Hike and Community Roasting: Discover the importance of supporting sustainable, community-centered coffee production and know the traditional way of coffee preparation through a hike in a local coffee farm. Experience community roasting as farmers bring their green beans to be roasted at the event using locally crafted technology.
