10 Deerfield Road, Ansonia, United States
Join us at the Nature Center, preserving and enhancing our precious forests and meadows! We’re on a mission to protect the integrity of our natural habitats by removing harmful invasive species and nurturing our valuable trees and plants.
Tues. Oct. 7, 14, 21, 28; 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.; Sat., Oct. 11, 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Phase 1: Japanese Knotweed Cuts - Oct. 7, 14, 21
We’ll kick things off with our final Japanese Knotweed cut of the season. The good news is the knotweed looks smaller this year than it did last year, so our persistence is paying off. I hope we can wrap it up in just three outings.
Phase 2: Protective Edge Cuts in Raptor Woods - Oct. 28; Nov. 4, 11,18, 25
Until the leaves fall, we’ll focus on protective edge cuts in Raptor Woods. These cuts clear invasive plants from the boundary where healthy native plants meet encroaching invasives. There are so many wonderful plant species up there, and it’s always rewarding to uncover a little blueberry bush or another native gem once it’s freed from the tangle of invasives.
Phase 3: Black Hole Triangle - Dec. 2, 9, 16, 3, 30
Once the leaves are down, we’ll head into the “Black Hole Triangle” off the Mead School Trail and Old Milan Trail. It’s about 5 acres of trees bound up in Asiatic Bittersweet - We’ve saved it for last since it’s going to be our toughest location.
