Film Preview: Unlocking Desire with Barbara Neri

Unlocking Desire seems to imagine Tennessee Williams' tragic heroine Blanche DuBois after A Streetcar Named Desire.
The setting is an institution where she could have been taken. There she meets a diverse group of inmates who evoke shadow characters of Williams' play and people from his real life. Their encounters mysteriously flesh out the beliefs that led to Blanche's downfall, beliefs still in play today.
Adapted from Barbara Neri's 2011 play, the film has been in development and is now in pre-production with a start date of spring 2025. The trailer was filmed in Detroit, and filming will continue in both Detroit and Ann Arbor.
2022 marked the 75th anniversary of the 1947 premiere of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire.
