Join ecologist David d'Entremont for a fall wildflower hike series along the Ganaraska Trail and nearby right-of-way trails, following the southeastern edge of the Minesing Wetlands! The focus of the hikes will be seasonal plants and flowers, however we will be keeping an eye out for other interesting wildlife sightings as well!
Hikes are expected to depart from the North End of Baldwick Lane near 3291-3233 Baldwick Ln, Utopia, ON, near the gate at the north end of the road. (see link in Google Maps:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/FEfmGfegZ8wbvH139)
The hikes start at 6:30PM on Thursdays, and are planned for September 18, September 25 and October 2, 2025 (Rain Date plan: We will simply bump the hikes by 1 week where possible if weather makes a given hike impossible). The hikes are anticipated to last for ~1.5 hours (end timing not definitive, though we will want to be back before dark).
Mobility advisement:
The Ganaraska Trail in this area is not always heavily curated, and can be somewhat steep/treacherous for people with poor mobility. It is recommended that hikers should join only if willing to climb/descend somewhat steep/slippery hills, cross small (1m wide) watercourses and limited mucky areas, and ascend/descend small A-frame ladders to get over property line fencing (all following the Ganaraska Trail and right-of-way trails).
Recommended to bring:
water resistant hiking boots and/or waterproof hiking boots (we are mostly staying dry, but there are a few mucky areas)
water/snacks (as desired)
binoculars/cameras/magnification loupes/visual aids (as desired)
insect repellant
Additional notes:
As a general reminder, when hiking in Minesing - as with all natural areas in our region - it is important to remember that there is potential for ticks to occur, which in some cases may carry lyme disease. Hikers are recommended to review and take advantage of best practices for tick bite prevention and as recommended by the Government of Canada:
https://www.canada.ca/.../ticks.../prevent-tick-bites.html
Poison Ivy is very common in some parts of the trail system. While we will be avoiding contact with this plant, please be advised that it does grow on some trailsides (we will be pointing it out where possible).
Some parts of the trail system that go through meadows are dense with plants. Long pants and proper hiking shoes are generally recommended, and this is particularly true on fall hikes.
Additional details will be provided in follow-up emails as the hike dates approach.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
