Before Sunrise (The Before Trilogy)

In the first film in what would become a beloved trilogy, Jesse (Ethan Hawke), a young American tourist, has a chance encounter with Céline (Julie Delpy), a French university student taking the train from Budapest to Paris.

A connection quickly forms as the two talk on the train, and Jesse convinces Céline to disembark in Vienna, where he's scheduled to board a plane home the next morning.

Day turns to night as they wander through the city. Across hours of conversation, their bond deepens, making the imminent goodbye more and more difficult.

Director Richard Linklater's follow-up to his sprawling and celebrated DAZED AND CONFUSED, which followed an enormous cast of characters, narrows the scope of focus considerably. Here, Linklater trains his camera on two souls, capturing the first sparks of attraction and crafting a deceptively simple ode to the thrill of romantic possibility.
