Our 100th concert! The Unwrinkled Ear and Trade School are pleased to present Scottish improvisor and computer musician Lauren Sarah Hayes, with local improvising instrumentalist Bernd Buerklin on accordion, electronics and who knows at else.
Lauren Sarah Hayes is a Scottish improviser, sound artist, and scholar who is recognised for her embodied approach to computer music. Her music is a mix of experimental pop/live electronics/techno/noise/free improvisation and has been described as "voracious" and "exhilarating". Her performances stretch, transform, and sculpt sound by manipulating, remixing, and bending voice, drum machines, analogue synths and self-built software live and physically. Her shows are highly gestural, exploring the ephemeral and fragile relationships between sounds, spaces, and audiences. Over nearly two decades, she has developed and honed her live electronics improvisation system, an instrument that allows her to playfully navigate between the realms of responsiveness and unpredictability in both her solo performances and numerous collaborations.

Bernd Buerklin (accordion, electronics, other instruments) is exploring silence through sound in his current project, xsh. He is the co-founder of the Berlin-based duo bazaq with bassist Axel Haller. In Woodstock, NY, he created the on-going project Tactless Pagans, collaborating with drummer Will Olsen and others. He provided the live, improvised music and sound effects for the Berlin production of Samuel Beckett’s Not I, and in Los Angeles he provided the accordion accompaniment for Yuval Ron’s Everywhere Nowhere: Music for LAX. He has performed solo in Germany, Denmark, France, New York, and Los Angeles. Playing from a place of not-knowing and non-virtuosity, Buerklin is interested in improvisation as a practice in both music and life. In addition to performing, he has created music videos for slow/dynamite, Federico Mompou, Arnold Schönberg, and Tactless Pagans.
