Why

Recent trauma research highlights that healing isn't just a mental process but also it’s a physical one. When we experience trauma, our bodies often hold onto the stress long after the threat has passed. According to Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score, trauma can become “stuck” in the nervous system, leading to symptoms like hypervigilance, emotional numbing, chronic tension, or disconnection from the body. Traditional talk therapy can be helpful, but it doesn’t always access these deep somatic imprints.

This is where embodied healing practices come into play. Embodiment means becoming aware of and connected to your internal bodily sensations. Practices like yoga, breathwork, somatic movement, dance, and trauma-informed mindfulness offer ways for people to gently reinhabit their bodies, reestablish a sense of safety, and process traumatic stress in ways that words often cannot. These modalities help regulate the nervous system, release stored tension, and build new pathways of trust and resilience.

Research supports these methods. For example, studies have shown that trauma-sensitive yoga can significantly reduce PTSD symptoms, particularly among individuals who haven’t responded to traditional therapies (van der Kolk et al., 2014). Similarly, somatic experiencing, a body-oriented therapeutic approach, has been shown to decrease trauma-related symptoms by helping clients gradually reconnect to bodily sensations without being overwhelmed (Payne, Levine & Crane-Godreau, 2015).

In this workshop, we’ll draw on these insights to guide you through simple, powerful practices that bring you back into your body in a safe, supported way. You don’t have to relive the trauma by gently reconnecting with your inner experience. This is where healing begins.
