Join Us at Eagle Plumes: Artist in Residence – Arthur Short Bull
We are honored to welcome Arthur Short Bull (Tatanka Ptecila) of the Oglala Lakota as our featured Artist in Residence at Eagle Plumes.
Over the past three decades, Arthur Short Bull has created more than 17 series of stunning watercolor paintings, exploring the deep history, quiet power, and layered mystery of the western landscape. From Pine Ridge, South Dakota to La Veta, Colorado, his work holds space for both beauty and memory, honoring the stories embedded in the land.
This special exhibition focuses on the recurring figure of Winyan Tate, or Wind Woman—a presence Short Bull first introduced in the early 1990s as a way to acknowledge and carry the memory of those lost at Wounded Knee in 1890. Her spirit threads through many of his paintings, embodying remembrance, resilience, and reflection.
Arthur Short Bull descends from a long line of Oglala Lakota storytellers and historians, including his great-grandfather Grant Short Bull and the renowned ledger artist Amos Bad Heart Bull. His work—rooted in watercolor, poetry, and heritage—is a continuation of that legacy and a powerful invitation to remember, to witness, and to learn.
🌾 Come experience a rare opportunity to meet the artist, view his work up close, and reflect on the landscapes and stories he so vividly brings to life.
📌 Admission is free and all are welcome.
