Warmer returns for its first gig in four years to launch a career retrospective CD on Half a Cow: Warmest: A Selection 2002-2020. Warmer is the singing/songwriting group of John Encarnação, also of The Nature Strip. For this show, the Warmer line-up will include Lloyd Swanton on double bass, Jess Ciampa on drums, Peter Kelly on trumpet and Zoë Carides on backing vocals. Stellar support will come from local legend Alannah Russack.
The folk-rock of Warmer began with a cache of songs John wrote in 2000 while high on Elliott Smith and Jason Falkner. Around this time he was also getting off on the minimalism of the songwriting of Lucinda Williams and Bill Callahan, while continuing to hone his own distinct pop songwriting craft. The debut album A Prayer for Soft Honey was released in 2002 by W.Minc in Melbourne. For the next album, The Cat’s Miaow (2005), John moved to old mate Nic Dalton’s Half a Cow label and has stayed there for Spider and Lamb (2011) and, after a period spent concentrating on The Nature Strip, Wooden Box with Strings (2020).
Warmest was compiled at Dalton’s request and features all the fan favourites and radio-played tunes from the Warmer catalogue,
Warmer LP #5 will commence recording in Wellington, NZ, in December.
Much-loved for her central role as guitarist and co-lead singer in one of Australia’s finest ever guitar pop bands, The Hummingbirds, Alannah Russack remains a revered performer and songwriter on the Australian music scene. Regularly playing solo and also with her band, Alannah Russack’s Entropy Band, and as a member of The Aerial Maps, she continues to win fans with her distinctive soaring vocals, melodic guitar playing and deeply affecting songs.
