About the event

Julia Eichardt. Book Launch with Lauren Roche and Nicola McCloy
Join Lauren Roche to celebrate the launch of her new book Julia Eichardt.
A captivating new historical novel, Julia Eichardt, shines a light on the remarkable women who helped to shaped early Central Otago, New Zealand. Written by Lauren Roche, the book tells the inspiring tale of Julia Shanahan Eichardt and the vibrant community around Otago during the gold rush era.
Julia’s story mirrors the growth of Otago itself, from a rugged settlement to a thriving settlements. Julia arrived in New Zealand in 1863 and worked at The Queens Arms hotel, originally William Rees’ woolshed, before gold fever transformed the region.
Alongside her husband Albert Eichardt, Julia transformed the old wooden hotel into a stunning Italianate stone building that became a symbol of hope and hospitality for the community. After Albert’s death, Julia’s resilience shone as she expanded the hotel into the elegant place she had always dreamed of.
Lauren Roche, drawn to stories of strong women, explains, “Much more is known of Aotearoa New Zealand’s ‘Founding Fathers’ than the women who also shaped the early community. But they too have names and stories worth telling.”
The novel explores themes of resilience, love, ambition, and ingenuity amid the harsh realities of 19th-century life — where families faced loss from childbirth, disease, and the dangers of gold mining.
It is a must-read for fans of historical fiction, gold rush stories, and New Zealand heritage.
Julia Eichardt is an unforgettable tale of Queenstown’s past seen through the eyes of a woman who helped build its future. It celebrates the enduring spirit of the women and families who built more than just hotels — they built a community.
