Join us for an engaging conversation with artists Judy Tuwaletstiwa, Joanna Keane Lopez, and Joan Weissman, whose works embody a deep personal relationship with either glass, adobe, or textile. This event is in celebration of the opening of "Abstracting Nature," which foregrounds the enduring connections of ten local artists to the New Mexico landscape. Hear how these three artists seek to blend natural elements with innovative approaches to traditional mediums, resulting in distinctive expressions of history, place, and belonging.

JULY TUWALETSTIWA is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, and teacher. In her artistic practice, she uses materials including sand, fibers, and kiln-fired glass to tell stories and engage with the natural world. Tuwaletstiwa lives in Galisteo, New Mexico and has exhibited at the Center for Contemporary Art in Santa Fe and The Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York, among others.

JOANNA KEANE LOPEZ works with natural materials such as adobe, paper, wood, and textile. Trained in traditional adobe construction, Lopez’s sculptural installations explore vernacular architecture, family, and the environment of New Mexico. She lives in Galisteo, New Mexico and has exhibited at SITE Santa Fe, 516 ARTS, and the Natural Hispanic Cultural Center, among others.

JOAN WEISSMAN specializes in textile, terrazzo, and porcelain ceramics. Her nature-inspired work is often installed publicly and is produced in collaboration with artisans and architects around the globe. Weissman lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico and her work can be found around the United States, including in the Center for the Arts at the University of New Mexico.
