Born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico, James Santillanes has been painting and exploring different forms of art for a lifetime. The breathtaking landscapes, vibrant skies, and unique culture of New Mexico deeply inspire his work. A dedicated artist and musician, James previously attended VSA for several years, where he nurtured both artistic and musical talents. An active member of Special Olympics for many years, James finds joy and purpose in both athletic and creative pursuits. Art is more than just a hobby—it’s a way of life, a passion that comes straight from the soul.
Patrick Gaiser was born and raised in San Francisco, CA. After graduating from Access SFUSD: The Arc, he continued his artistic studies at Creativity Explored. In 2017 he and his family moved to New Mexico where he joined VSA North Fourth Art Center. It was here that he met Tom Brejcha, his art teacher and mentor to this day. Patrick is a friendly and optimistic young man with a great sense of humor and compassion. He loves music, particularly that of the 1960s through 1980s, and his subjects are usually the faces of musicians, actors, or self-portraits. Patrick is eager to learn new techniques and experiment with new media and subjects. "When you’re making art," he says, “if it doesn’t turn out perfect, that’s okay. It’s just part of the fun."
Teyent Tefera was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico on August 27, 1982. She started drawing as a young child and began taking classes at VSA and Art connection. She also paints with her art teacher, Tom Brejcha. She enjoys painting New Mexico landscapes, adobe churches, flowers and animals.
The featured artists met and came together working with their art teacher Tom Brejcha at the North 4th Art Center. In 2013, Tom Brejcha was hired at the North 4th Art Center where he worked with artists with different abilities. He taught painting, drawing, and music. In March of 2020 the North 4th Art Center school closed due to COVID-19 and lack of funding. Despite the closing of the school, Brejcha’s students continue to develop their artwork and maintain their friendships and are coming together for their first collective art exhibit Creative Canvas of Courage on May 2, 2025 from 6pm to 8pm which will also feature some art pieces by their art teacher, Tom Brejcha. Join us for an evening of community, art, music, and food by The Munchie Truck.
The exhibit will run from May 2 to June 30, 2025.
