Discover how artifacts and archives can illuminate new stories and uncover mysteries of the Revolutionary Era in Albany County.

About this Event

Learn how new discoveries - whether located underground or buried deep within archives - illuminate our Revolutionary era past and invite new questions. Explore Albany's Revolutionary history in celebration of the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution as part of the Albany County Historical Association's Crossroads of History Lecture Series. Innovative research techniques using artifacts, art, and documents will also be discussed.

Location: all of the talks will be held at King's Place (on the Ten Broeck Mansion campus). Free parking in our off-street lot (adjacent to the lecture site). Please use GPS address 136 Livingston Avenue.

Program Schedule:

Lectures: Material Worlds of the American Revolution in Albany County

  • 12 noon: Marietta Carr, Schenectady County Historical Society Librarian/Archivist, Archives Discoveries of the Revolution
  • 1 pm: Tyler Warman, NYS Museum, The Gunboat at Ground Zero: A Revolutionary War Mystery
  • 2 pm: Kathryn Kosto, Albany County Historical Association Executive Director, New Faces of Liberty: Founders & Freedom in Revolutionary Era Art of Albany County

About the Speakers:

Marietta Carr, Schenectady County Historical Society, Librarian/Archivist. She joined the SCHS in 2019 and has worked in archives, libraries, and museums for over 10 years. At SCHS, her role includes collecting and preserving archival and genealogical materials that tell the story of our area and our communities, assisting researchers from all walks of life and around the world, and facilitating interactions with primary sources, the raw materials of history. Marietta earned her B.A. and M.A. in History from Northeastern University in Boston, MA, and her M.L.I.S. from the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA. She is originally from Harrisburg, PA.

Tyler Warman, New York State Museum, Educator. Tyler Warman will discuss how 600 pieces of timber and 2,000 artifacts-including musket balls, buttons, and ceramic tankards-tell the story of one of the few documented American-built Revolutionary War vessels. Tyler Warman is a museum educator at the New York State Museum offering tours and educational experiences centered around the research, collections, and exhibits of the Museum. He was the Assistant Archivist for the USS Slater/Destroyer Escort Historical Museum. A life-long history lover, he has a Master’s Degree in Public/Applied History and History from the University at Albany.

Kathryn Kosto, Albany County Historical Association, Executive Director. She previously served as curator of the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow House (Cambridge MA), and an archives specialists with the papers of Frederick Law Olmsted (Brookline MA). She studied 18th century Dutch at Leiden University (Netherlands). She holds a BA in history and the history of art from Yale University and a MA in history from Cornell University.
