Bela Ruino (“beautiful ruin” in Esperanto) is the new project from violinist, singer, and songwriter Lila Sklar (Joanna Newsom, Bauhaus, Love and Rockets, Kugelplex). Drawing from Middle Eastern and Balkan traditions, torch songs, Motown grooves, Tom Waits, and Lila’s own haunting originals, Bela Ruino is a journey through light and dark—where beauty thrives in contradictions. With Lila’s soaring violin and vocals joined by Max Baloian (guitar), Safa Shokrai (bass), Jason Levis (drums), and Jill Rogers (guitar/vox), the band’s live shows move seamlessly from soul-stirring ballads to irresistible grooves.
Junk Parlor sways between earnestly upbeat and time-warping lullabies. Their music is a dramatic, poetic collage of Eastern European folk, punk, and indie—where wild, driving rhythms collide with tender, cinematic melodies. Accordion, violin, bass, drums, and guitar frame richly textured vocals, creating an atmosphere that’s as celebratory as it is otherworldly.
