The Public Fascination with Poison Narratives

Dr Rachel Spencer will be in conversation with Margaret Castles about the public fascination with poison narratives. Rachel will discuss her research into the Emily Perry case and draw comparisons with the recent "Mushroom Case". Rachel will discuss the stereotype with the female poisoner and its development as a trope in both fiction and nonfiction.This will be an 'in conversation' and Xmas networking event with platters of food available.Author Bio:Rachel Spencer’s career for over thirty years was as a practising lawyer and legalacademic in Adelaide and Melbourne. In 2021 Rachel completed a PhD in CreativeWriting and in 2022 she left her role as an Associate Professor of Law at MonashUniversity and the Director and Principal Lawyer of Monash Law Clinics, temporarilystepping into the assistant manager role of Mostly Books, Adelaide’s oldest survivingindependent bookshop (where she still works as a bookseller and runs a Law andLiterature book club).Rachel now works as a freelance writer, editor and consultant. She also works as alearning advisor and an occasional law teacher across two universities. Rachel hasserved on many not-for-profit boards across more than two decades, including(currently) Writers SA. She is the President of the Friends of the Library of theUniversity of Adelaide.Rachel has published several book chapters and scholarly articles journals and onelegal textbook. She continues to research and write about law and literature, memoir,speculative biography and true crime.
