About the event

Tour 1: Quantum Crystals and Cold atoms labs
In this combined tour we explore how rare earth crystals are used to build devices and how and why researchers cool atoms.

About this Event

THIS TOUR IS CURRENTLY SOLD OUT.

Please choose a timeslot and subscribe to our waitlist. Limited number of places can become avaialble on a day in case of no show.

****************

During this combined tour you will visit two labs (20 minutes each).

Quantum Crystals lab

Description: The internet we use today runs on light, and so will the quantum internet of tomorrow. But to make that future possible, we need new technologies that can store, control, and transmit quantum light. Step into the Quantum Crystals lab to explore how we are using rare earth crystals to build these devices, from quantum memories to quantum modems. Learn about the science of spectroscopy that underpins this effort, and the extreme environments needed for high performance quantum devices.

Bose-Einstein condensate lab (cold atoms lab)

Description: Using lasers, we can cool atoms down to a temperature approaching absolute zero. In this state, it is possible to observe the quantum behaviour of matter. The Bose-Einstein condensate lab is capable of generating a small 1 mm sized ball containing over 1 million Rubidium atoms. Learn about how this ultra-cold ball of atoms can be used as a quantum test bed for developing quantum sensors, allowing precise measurements of acceleration, rotations and physical constants.

Tour themes: Quantum atoms, quantum sensors, quantum light, quantum technology

Labs keywords: lasers, crystals, spectroscopy, vacuum system.

Accessibility and safety:
  • Enclosed shoes are mandatory, no thongs, crocs etc. If we can see skin below your ankle, you can't come in.
  • Wheelchair accessible.
  • Some bright/flashing laser light.
  • No loud noises except balloons popping.
  • Footstools for children and chairs for people to sit in are available in the quantum crystals lab.
  • Lasers will be off or completely enclosed for the demonstration.
  • The lab does contain large magnetic fields, but these will not be energised.
