WAYS OF PREVENTING HIV
Five ways to prevent HIV/AIDS transmission are: using condoms correctly with every sexual encounter, limiting sexual partners, avoiding sharing needles and other drug injection equipment, taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) if at risk, and receiving timely post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) after potential exposure.
1. Practice Safer Sex: Use condoms correctly and consistently during vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Limit your number of sexual partners and consider testing for sexually transmitted infections.
2. Avoid Sharing Needles: Never share needles, syringes, or other drug injection equipment to prevent the spread of HIV through bloodborne transmission.
3. Take PrEP: If you are at high risk of HIV infection, consider taking PrEP, a daily medication that can help prevent HIV acquisition.
4. Seek PEP: If you suspect you may have been exposed to HIV, seek PEP, which is a course of HIV medication taken within 72 hours of exposure to potentially prevent infection.
5. Get Tested and Treated: Regular testing for HIV and other STIs is crucial for early detection and treatment, which can help prevent the spread of HIV. If you test positive for HIV, starting and consistently taking antiretroviral therapy (ART) can reduce the viral load and prevent transmission to others.
