We will meet on the road outside The Skirrid Inn, allegedly the oldest pub in Wales and like the mountain which overlooks it it is the the stuff of much myth and legend and stories of hauntings... The Skirrid in is argably the most haunted pub in Wales too.
Tickets for this walk are £15. This payment is non-refundable. It will only be refunded in the event of a non-weather related cancellation. *Tickets/spaces for this walk/event are pre booked and pre paid, please don't just turn up on the day with cash*
The 'SUGAR LOAF' mountain is a favourite in the Brecon Beacons , towering over the market town of Abergavenny, on the southern edge of the National Park.
SKIRRID' is known locally as ‘the Holy Mountain’. This may have come from two sources. The first is the now-ruined chapel of St Michael’s on the summit, which was used by Roman Catholics after the Reformation.
The second is from a popular legend, which tells how the dramatic landslide on the north of the mountain was caused by an earthquake or lightning strike at the moment of the crucifixion of Jesus.
There was a local tradition that earth from the Skirrid was holy and especially fertile, and it was taken away to be scattered on fields, on coffins, and in the foundations of churches. Pilgrimages were made to the summit, especially on Michaelmas Eve.
Bring layers and enough food and water to sustain you on this hike.
Please only attempt this hike if you are a good level of fitness, this is a 15 mile hike with over 3,500 ft of elevation.
It would be rude not to have a drink in this famous haunted pub after.
