He also studied closely with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, receiving deep Dharma training. In 2012, the Dalai Lama appointed him Abbot of Rato Dratsang Monastery, the first Westerner to hold such a role.
Monk with a Camera is a documentary (2014) about Nicholas Vreeland’s journey from fashion photography to Tibetan monastic life. It highlights how he uses photography to serve the Dharma, raising funds to rebuild Rato Dratsang Monastery.
Khyongla Rato Rinpoche (1923–2022) was a Gelug lama and founder of The Tibet Center in New York. He was a close disciple of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, serving as a bridge for bringing the Dalai Lama’s teachings to the West.
