Rae Gandolf is a Zanesville-based artist and veterinarian whose work explores the connections among people and animals, and the battle of left brain and right brain. Her art spans drawing, painting, sculpting, and public murals, often inspired by the extraordinary individuals and animals she encounters in her travels—from a spider monkey in Guatemala to a woman in Nepal.
Locally, Rae created the mural next to Harbor Freight on Maple Avenue, a piece that weaves together elements of Zanesville’s history and community spirit. Her earlier sculpting work for Cottrill Studio includes a donkey, penguin and crane among other animals that can be seen in and outside of the studio in downtown Zanesville.
Rae’s art training began with an exceptional high school art teacher who encouraged her to spend every extra hour in the art room and sent her to a summer art program at Wesleyan University. Since then, from a spray graffiti class at the Bellingham Mural Festival to online digital art courses and local workshops, most of her development as an artist has come through exploration, curiosity, and persistence.
Her work reflects a deep curiosity about the world and a lifelong commitment to compassion, creativity, and expression.
