Did you know that the brain is most receptive to new information when the body feels relaxed first?
Science shows that when the body is relaxed, the nervous system shifts toward a parasympathetic state (the “rest and digest” mode). In this state, the brain is calmer, more open, and better able to process and integrate new information. In contrast, when we’re stressed or tense, the sympathetic nervous system (the “fight or flight” mode) dominates — attention narrows, memory and creativity decrease, and learning efficiency drops.
So while the brain can still learn under stress, relaxation improves receptivity, memory consolidation, and creativity. This is why Somatic techniques can significantly boost focus and retention.
