“We Are Beggars”
On the day of his death, Martin Luther gave a final confession:
“Wir sind Bettler. Hoc est verum.”
We are beggars. This is true.
We come not as the strong, the accomplished, or the self-sufficient, but as beggars—marked with ashes, emptied of excuses, and dependent upon mercy. We bring nothing to God except our need. And this is precisely where God meets us.
The Small Catechism was written for beggars. It teaches Christians how to listen, how to believe, and how to pray. At its heart stands the Lord’s Prayer. It’s a guide to a cry and conversation of those who have nothing except a gracious Father who gives us our daily bread.
Throughout these midweek services, we will learn again to pray as beggars pray: not demanding, not bargaining, not pretending, but asking. Each week, we will take up the petitions of the Lord’s Prayer, trusting the promise that the Father who invites us to pray will also hear us, forgive us, and deliver us.
We are beggars. This is true. And in Christ, beggars are given everything.
