About this Event

Writers at York

A recent graduate from the Department of English and Related Literature, Jack Mackay (2021-2024) has published his debut novel , a Gothic horror fiction aimed at the middle grade market, to enormous acclaim. Published by Rock the Boat (OneWorld) in the UK and Viking in the USA, Gloam has also sold translation rights in France, Italy, Brazil, and Croatia. It has been named a Sunday Times Children’s Book of the Week, and a Fiction Book of the Month by School Reading List, which described it as “a genuinely terrifying tale with a message about families, bravery, and fighting your own nightmares”. The audiobook is narrated by Indira Varma (Game of Thrones, Luther).

In October, Jack will read from Gloam, talk about his writing and experiences, and offer tips to aspiring novelists via a friendly Q&A.

Jack said: "I'm SO excited to be returning to my beloved University of York. I wrote GLOAM while I was in my second year and I was endlessly inspired by the wealth of knowledge and creativity at UoY. My English course introduced me to whole new worlds of literature which I felt very privileged to be able to study. It opened doors into countless new styles and genres and served as a fascinating introduction to the business of publishing in general. I know it made me a better writer and a more interesting person all-round. I'm looking forward to coming back to say hi."

Head of Department Jennie Batchelor said, "It is always brilliant to hear from our students about their many successes after they leave us. We are so proud of Jack and are delighted that his work is getting the recognition it so thoroughly deserves. Creative writing is really important to our curriculum in English at York and we are pleased to be expanding provision in this area. It will be such a pleasure to welcome Jack to our campus and the Department and we hope you can join us when we do!"
