In 1906 in rural Dalby, it was reported that a white child was living in a ‘black’s camp’. That child was Valerie Howell’s grandmother, Jessie. At 7 years of age Jessie was removed from her Aboriginal mother Clara, and taken to Rhyndarra, the Salvation Army Girls Industrial School at Yeronga.
In 1982 Valerie and her mother Joan began their research to uncover the story of Jessie’s life. The research has taken them into the archives and to places across SE Qld including Taroom, Mitchell, Dalby, Woorabinda and Brisbane.
Valerie Howell was born in Brisbane in 1945. She is proud to have published Jessie’s biography 40 years after she and her mother Joan started their research.
