About the Event:
The first part of the two-day event, “Global Armenia: Entangled Histories with Europe and the Caucasus,” this public roundtable brings together leading scholars to explore the place of the South Caucasus in global history. The discussion will situate Armenian experiences within broader processes of transnationalism, globalization, and regional interaction, highlighting how Armenians engaged with and shaped global historical currents in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Co-organized by the Turpanjian Institute of Social Sciences and the Max Weber Foundation Georgia Branch Office, the roundtable will feature Dr. Katja Castryck, Dr. Stephan Astourian, Dr. Edita Gzoyan, and Dr. Naira Sahakyan.
About the Speakers:
▪️ Dr. Katja Castryck is a leading expert in transregional and global history. She heads the “Global Armenians” research group at the Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe in Leipzig, Germany.
▪️ Dr. Stephan Astourian is the director of the AUA Turpanjian Institute of Social Sciences and professor in the AUA M.A. in International Relations and Diplomacy program. He is a renowned scholar of modern Armenian, Turkish, and Caucasian history and post-Soviet politics.
▪️ Dr. Edita Gzoyan is the director of the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute and the head of the Department on Legal Issues on the Armenian Genocide.
▪️ Dr. Naira Sahakyan is assistant professor of history at AUA. Her research focuses on revolutionary transformations, Islam, and nationalism in the Caucasus.
