Workshop Description:
This full day workshop will provide an in-depth exploration of the fundamental principles of cyanotype printmaking or “Sun-printing”. Students will be guided through the process of producing cyanotypes, setting up a basic printing lab within their own studio spaces, and learning a variety of techniques in cyanotype printing. This includes three distinct approaches to cyanotype printing: utilizing photographic negatives, creating images from illustrations, and producing photograms. The session will include experimentation with various types of paper to observe different effects. Additionally, the class will discuss methods for toning cyanotype prints, allowing students to further expand the visual possibilities of their work. By the end of the workshop, participants will have acquired the skills necessary to create cyanotypes.
Introduction to Cyanotype Printmaking:
Cyanotype printmaking is a unique, camera-less photographic technique that produces striking Prussian blue images rapidly, often within minutes. Unlike traditional photography, cyanotype offers a more hands-on and immediate approach to image creation, requiring only minimal supplies. This accessibility encourages experimentation and spontaneity, making it a versatile medium for artistic exploration. Throughout the workshop, students will have the chance to create images using found objects, locally sourced materials, personal photographs, and original drawings.
