Understanding Hyperpigmentation
Introduction
Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition characterized by darkened patches or spots on the skin due to excess melanin production. This is a process that is speed up as a result of
1. sun exposure ( age spot, liver spot, solar spot)
2. Post inflammatory trauma( pimples breakout, insect bites, burns, friction, irritation, skin trauma)
3. Hormones ( melasma)
The melanin is produced to protect the skin from sun’s UVA and UVB radiation.
We can say that the dark layer (hyperpigmentation) protection is your skin’s response ( putting on a pair of glasses) to the sun’s UVB radiation.
Hyperpigmentation can occur in small patches, cover large areas or affects the entire body.
It is often harmless but you can choose to remove or reduce it.
It can affect all skin tones but is more visible and persistent in darker complexions, making it a major cosmetic and dermatological concern across Africa and beyond.
While not medically dangerous, hyperpigmentation can cause emotional distress, uneven skin tone, and reduced confidence. Understanding its underlying causes and proper treatment options is crucial for managing it effectively.
