The Joll of House Party Opera
A spicy fusion of opera and hip-hop
A FIO and Music Theatre Wales co-production
Chef Adeola is feeling the heat – and we’re not talking pepper soup! Between running a business, juggling life with a new baby, and an all-important food safety inspection looming, the pressure is on. Can they handle it, or will it all boil over?
The Jollof House Party Opera is a 20-minute live pop-up experience blending hip-hop and opera into a one-of-a-kind show.
Written and performed by Welsh-Nigerian artist Tumi Williams, this brand-new production directed by Elayce Ismail also stars Black British Theatre Award winner April Koyejo-Audiger. A true celebration of modern, multicultural Cymru, The Jollof House Party Opera was created to shake up and reshape perceptions of opera, opening up access to live performance.
Based on the Celtic Film Award-winning short film by the same creators, The Jollof House Party Opera was originally co-created by Tumi Williams and Sita Thomas.
A multidisciplinary artist, Tumi Williams moves fluidly between music, theatre, and storytelling. Best known as the frontman of Afro Cluster, the acclaimed Cardiff-based collective blending hip-hop, Afrobeat, funk, and jazz, he has performed on major stages including Glastonbury, SXSW, and Boomtown. The band’s 2021 album The Reach was nominated for the Welsh Music Prize, cementing their place as favourites in the Welsh music scene. Tumi also performs as Skunkadelic, bringing his signature fusion of hip-hop and funk to audiences across the UK. Drawing inspiration from his Nigerian heritage, he is the founder of Jollof House Party, a pop-up experience that celebrates the connection between music, culture, and community.
