About the Event
The Coalfield Cup returns to North Wales in 2025, proudly hosted at the state-of-the-art Colliers Park facility in Wrexham. This invitational walking football festival celebrates health, heritage, and community spirit, open exclusively to teams from the historic coalfield communities of Wrexham, Denbighshire and Flintshire.
Now in its second North Wales edition, this unique 60+ tournament is a core part of the Game On Wales programme, delivered by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust (Charity No. 1074930) — an Affiliate Partner of the FAW. We continue to champion former mining communities, promoting wellbeing and inclusion through sport.
Why It Matters
Wales’ coal mining heritage runs deep — and while South Wales is often the focal point, North Wales played a vital role too. In 1918, over 60 coal pits operated across Wrexham, Denbighshire and Flintshire. By 1978, only three remained. The tragic Gresford Colliery disaster in 1934, which claimed 266 lives, is a sobering reminder of that legacy.
Today, the social and economic impact of the coal industry’s decline is still felt across these communities. Game On Wales uses football as a tool to reconnect, reenergise, and support the wellbeing of those who built these communities — and those still living with their legacy.
