42Worcester is the Worcestershire 'alternative genre' monthly Spoken Word event covering gothic, horror, sci-fi and fantasy. It is held on the last Tuesday of every month— the online section opens at 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start.
42Worcester is a hybrid event. Our venue is the wonderful Script Haven, 104 High Street, Worcester - not far from the Cathedral - the cafe/bookshop/Spoken Word Hub in a historic building where Charles Dickens once stayed . . . If you can't get there in person, we are also on Zoom, for both audience members and performers.
We are inclusive, diverse and friendly - we have published authors performing, and we also have writers just starting out and building up confidence - everybody is welcome (just respect fellow performers!)
The Zoom invitation / link will appear here on the day.
We issue a prompt for most months of the year and while pieces that reflect the prompt are preferred, we understand that not everyone will have a piece that ‘fits’. That doesn't matter - we want to hear what you write!
October means it's the Spooky Season, and October 31st is Halloween/Samhain, when the veil between the worlds is thin, and it's easy for entities to cross between the two . . . The October theme comes from a local writer - West Midlands, anyway, and although he was more active on the Stratford scene, he must have visited Worcester at least once because the license for his rather dodgy marriage was issued at St Martin's in the Cornmarket, and I like to think that he probably walked past the future site of Script Haven at some time, and maybe looked our way . . . Yes, local playwright William Shakespeare! And in Act 2 Scene 3 of the Scottish Play, he wrote this , . .
"The night has been unruly . . .
Lamentings heard i' th' air: strange screams of death
And prophesying, with accents terrible,
Of dire combustions and confus'd events
New hatch'd to the woeful time; the obscure bird
Clamour'd the livelong night; some say the earth
was feverous and did shake."
That sounds like a good night at 42! . . . And our October theme is 'The Night has Been Unruly' . . . Interpret it how you want - enjoy!!
