THOMAS TRUAX

Thomas Truax (pronounced troo-aks) is an American singer/musician, inventor and multi-media artist. We are utterly delighted to welcome him back to The Sunfold, six years since he mesmerised the crowd at our very first UNFOLD weekender.

One of the most imaginative characters on the pop music fringe, since the year 2000 Thomas has been traveling the world performing with his evolving “band” of bizarre self-made Harry Partch-esque instruments including a motorized drum machine made of bike wheels called ‘Mother Superior’ and a pimped-up Dr. Seuss-ian Gramophone called ‘The Hornicator’, as well as his venerable resonator guitar ‘Hank’. Time Out magazine has dubbed him “The king of home-made instruments” while Splendid magazine called him “one of the five or ten best singer/songwriters in the world that you’ve never heard of…an exceptional talent, unique and resistant to comparison, yet fairly accessible even to casual listeners.”

Truax crafts rich, poetically evocative songs about insects, trees, technology, and a lifelong obsession with things lunar, including various reasons ‘Why Dogs Howl at The Moon’. Notable supporters and collaborators include Jarvis Cocker, Duke Special, Richard Hawley, James Smith of Yard Act, Bob Log III, the Dresden Dolls and the late author Terry Pratchett. His latest album ‘Dream Catching Songs‘ featuring drummer Budgie of the Slits, Siouxsie & The Banshees et al. was released in 2023.

What is VÄLVĒ? Folk lullabies re-imagined by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Found-sound collages interrupted by Welsh language orations and sudden outbursts of fuzz bass. Gleaming synthpop workouts that collapse into swirling dreamscapes of sax and harp. Tiny sounds opening out onto the epic. Hi-tech and no-tech, deployed with equal measures of discipline and abandon. Carefully sculpted disorder. Uncanny geometries of noise and melody. Dizzy and gleeful and drawn in notebooks. That is VÄLVĒ.

The Sunfold is a regular guest house in the popular Victorian resort of Weston-super-Mare run by Steve and Lana who, in amongst offering warm hospitality for Brummie/Welsh tourists, occasionally run deeply Avant garde musical happenings down in their cosy basement lounge bar. Previous events have been a stupendous, yet secret success – a fervent clientele of staying and visiting music-lovers were treated to a veritable cornucopia of weird music through the bi-annual UNFOLD weekenders. Now The Sunfold prizes open its doors for a series of one-off shows by incredible and unique touring artists.

At these special UNFOLD events, each evening will open at 7pm, music from 8pm punctuated by an eclectic selection of outsider tunes. You may need to knock on the basement window to get the attention of someone to let you in as the night progresses, much like some kind of seaside speakeasy! (or probably easier to just open the basement door and waltz right in).
