In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the City of Woodland is sponsoring the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay and Visual Art Contest for K–12 students. Local students from Woodland schools are encouraged to participate.
2026 Contest Theme: “Unity in Action: Building a Better Tomorrow”
Dr. King taught that true progress comes when communities unite with purpose, compassion, and courage. Students are invited to reflect on how they can take action—through kindness, service, or leadership—to help build a more just, inclusive, and hopeful future.
Contest Criteria
• All entries must be original work created by the entrant.
• Entries may not include copyrighted material or offensive content.
• Visual Art: May be created in any medium—drawing, painting, mixed media, or digital—and should be submitted as a clear photograph.
• Poetry: Any style accepted; poems should not exceed 20 lines.
• Essays: Must be a minimum of 300 words and no more than 750 words.
Contest Divisions
• Grades K–2
• Grades 3–5
• Grades 6–8
• Grades 9–12
(Students must attend school in Woodland.)
Awards
• First Place: Certificate and $75 gift card for each division winner.
• Teacher Recognition: Teachers of winning students will each receive a $30 gift card.
Contest Deadline
All entries must be submitted by Wednesday, January 7, 2026. ENTER THE CONTEST ONLINE --> bit.ly/4faQkN9 Finalists will be recognized at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.
