YOGA FOR THE EQUESTRIAN
Ride comfortably, feel more confident, and form a deeper connection with yourself and your horse. If you are uncomfortable or unbalanced in your body or mind, your horse can sense and feel this imbalance, even through the saddle. Finding balance will help to improve your riding, as well as the health and happiness of your horse.
Yoga will address many of the issues that riders often experience, some of which include, low back pain; tight hips, IT bands, adductors and hamstrings; poor posture; anxiety; and lack of confidence. An imbalance in the hips can result in an uncomfortable seat, which can affect your balance, precision in movement, and your ability to be in control of your horse. The mental/emotional benefits of yoga will help you to feel more grounded, focused and fully present while riding.
By incorporating a regular yoga practice (1-2 times per week) into your routine, you can expect to attain a deeper seat and experience a more comfortable ride. As your hips become more open, your heels will drop down into the stir-ups, allowing you to use your inner leg muscles properly. You will also be better able to lengthen your leg position on horseback. As we strengthen the core and release tension from the shoulders and upper back, your posture will improve. You will feel more confident, balanced and in control. This, in turn, will instill a sense of confidence and focus in your horse, and help you to establish a deeper connection with your horse.
