About the event

Forsyth County Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) Program
The Junior Appalachian Music (JAM) Program at the UNCSA Community Music School introduces young musicians to the rich and living traditions of Appalachian music through a welcoming, after-school group experience. Designed as an entry point into old-time and bluegrass styles, JAM focuses on fiddle, banjo, and guitar, with supplemental instruction in old-time dance, ensemble playing, and community music-making.

The program runs for 12 weeks, beginning Tuesday, February 17, and meets Tuesdays from 4:00–6:00 p.m. Classes are held on the UNCSA campus in Workplace West, Building 5, and culminate in a celebratory student showcase performance for families and the community.

Rooted in the oral traditions of Appalachian music, students learn primarily by ear, strengthening aural skills, rhythmic understanding, musical memory, and ensemble awareness. Repertoire is drawn from traditional Appalachian tunes and is taught in a collaborative, group-based setting that supports students with a range of prior musical experience. Alongside instrumental instruction, students are introduced to Appalachian culture, history, and dance, helping them connect the music they play to its cultural roots.

Classes are led by a distinguished faculty of traditional musicians and educators:

- Rex McGee, banjo and fiddle instructor, multi-instrumentalist, educator, and composer

- Ben Masterson, fiddle and banjo instructor, traditional music educator and North Carolina Folklife Apprenticeship grant recipient

- Jessie McGee, site lead and dance instructor, bringing expertise in old-time flatfooting and youth-centered community leadership

- Rick Davidson, multi-instrumentalist rooted in Virginia fife traditions and Surry County old-time string band music

- Chester McMillian, guitar instructor, legendary Round Peak-style musician and 2025 North Carolina Heritage Award recipient

Modeled after the nationally recognized Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) Network, the UNCSA JAM Program is directly affiliated with JAM and connects students to a broader regional community of young musicians across North Carolina and the Southeast. The program emphasizes collaboration, listening, shared leadership, and confidence-building creating not only strong musical foundations but also friendships and a sense of belonging.
