Join Burlington Silent Book Club and the Winooski Memorial Library for a special read-in to celebrate Banned Books Week! Bring your own banned or challenged book to read or peruse one from the Library’s collection. Light refreshments will be provided. This is a fun, community-based opportunity to turn the act of reading into a visible, peaceful protest against censorship.
Here's what to expect:
6:00-6:30 - Get settled. Grab a seat and refreshments, chat with your fellow readers
6:30-7:30 - Quiet reading hour. Read the book you brought (or borrowed from the library!)
7:30-8:00 - Stick around to chat more, keep reading, or head out
About Banned Books Week: First launched in 1982 in response to a surge in the number of challenges to books in libraries, schools, and bookstores, Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the right to read and spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books. This year's theme is "Censorship Is So 1984 — Read for Your Rights” and recognizes the harms of censorship and our rights as readers to seek and express ideas.
Silent Book Club is a global community of readers, with 500+ chapters around the world led by local volunteers. SBC members gather to read and build community in quiet camaraderie. Follow our Burlington, Vermont chapter on Instagram and Facebook: @silentbookclubbtv
