Windsor is a town built by bricks, both literally and metaphorically. Our ground is clay, our buildings are red, and our economy was shaped by millions of hand-formed blocks. Brickmaking was adopted by Windsor settlers in the mid-1600s and by the middle of the 19th century, there were over 40 brickyards in town, sending Windsor bricks across the nation.
This tour will cover the origins of brickmaking in Windsor, walk the grounds of the old Mack Brick Yard, and delve into the history of downtown’s most prominent brick buildings.
Please wear comfortable shoes. The tour is a 1.5 mile loop beginning and ending at the town green in front of the post office.
