About the Workshop

Join Barton College’s fall 2025 artist-in-residence Benjamin Hawley for a hands-on studio workshop exploring how to translate observed still-life forms into abstract compositions through choices of shape, value, and color. Expect demonstrations, guided exercises, and individual feedback.

• Rags for wiping out

About the Instructor

Benjamin Hawley (BFA, Barton College ’17; MFA, Boston University ’22) is a Boston-based painter whose work negotiates the space between observation and abstraction. His paintings reframe everyday objects—such as bowls, snow, or columns—by layering atmosphere, memory, and formal invention, encouraging viewers to perceive familiar forms in new ways.

Hawley’s art has been featured in New American Paintings (MFA Annual #177), ArtMaze Magazine, and Artsin Square Magazine. He has exhibited with Kathryn Markel Fine Arts, The Painting Center, and other galleries in New England and New York. At Boston University, he was awarded the Joseph Ablow Memorial Painting Prize. During his 2025 residency at Barton, he will mentor students, host public events, and present his solo exhibition “A sentence that cannot be taken in or forgotten”.
