About the event

Sound and Space at the African Baptist Meetinghouse
A part of our Good Stories About Great Stuff lecture series. Join us every Monday at 1:00 in the Hennage to hear the stories behind some of Colonial Williamsburg's treasures directly from our experts.

In the early 19th century, over 500 free and enslaved African Americans worshipped at the African Baptist Meetinghouse on Nassau Street. With a church that was only 32 x 16 feet large, how did that many people use both the space in and around the building? Join archaeologist Katie Macbeth on an experimental journey to investigate what could be seen and heard at the African Baptist Meetinghouse during church services.
